“I know it when I see it,” said United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, when describing hardcore pornography. The same can be said for good writing.
While it is difficult to define what good writing is, it follows a few key principles. That is not to say all writing that follows these principles is good, but that all writers who write well follow these principles.
Use short sentences. If there is one thing you can take away from this newsletter, then let it be this: use short sentences. Short sentences (2 - 35 words) are generally crisp and clear. They keep the reader’s interest and don’t allow his focus to waiver. Long sentences confuse the reader and often force his mind to wander.
Write succinct paragraphs. Your paragraphs should generally be under 10 sentences long. They should convey ideally one, and at most two big ideas.
Employ active voice wherever possible. Active voice makes your writing stand out. It demonstrates control and vigor, thereby inspiring trust and confidence in the reader.
Be cogent. The above three principles are all for naught if your writing is not ordered logically with an overarching structure to it.
Summary: If you want to write well, use short sentences, formulate pithy paragraphs, employ active voice whenever possible, and be coherent.

This is pithy and to the point.
